    Choose your tests

Decide which chickens you’d like to test and what you want to learn about each one.

  2. 02

Collect, pack & label your sample

Cut a coffee filter into 2-inch triangular pieces. Any disposable coffee filter will do.

Using pet clippers sanitized with a 10% bleach solution or a disposable, pre-sanitized lancet, carefully clip back your bird’s toenail or use the lancet until blood is visible. You may need to gently rub or massage the toe to bring blood to the surface. When the blood begins to pool, use the tip of the filter to collect it. You do not need a large amount of blood; just make sure the corner is soaked through.

Allow the blood to dry on the filter, then place the filter in a zip-top bag. Label the bag with your preferred identifier for the sample, such as 1, 2, 3, Bob, Mary, or Sue. Make sure the identifier on the physical sample matches the one you entered in the mobile app. If the identifiers do not match, you will receive results assigned to the wrong bird.

Disclaimer: Be sure to sanitize your clippers with a 10% bleach solution and dry them thoroughly between birds. Rubbing alcohol does not properly break down DNA, which can increase the risk of inaccurate results.
